Any company with a brick-and-mortar store for merchandise sales knows the importance of having point-of-sale (POS) terminals that process payments quickly and easily — for both customers and employees. For a large motorsports company that owns multiple NASCAR teams, gearing up for a special event last year also meant the need for PCI-compliant POS stations.
PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) dictates the technical and operational requirements merchants and service providers must follow to protect cardholder data when storing, processing or transmitting credit cards.
With just under a month to go before their event, the company’s security manager knew this was a job for MicroAge’s Schan Krug.
“They had recently upgraded their Counterpoint POS software,” Schan explains. “But with their old hardware, they couldn’t stay PCI compliant.”
So, the organization was on the hunt for hardware that met the new software’s system requirements.
Working with a distributor, Schan explored the various options to present to the client.
“There are a lot of PCI-compliant POS solutions out there,” he says. “But there were only a handful that would work with their software.”
The client wanted to get away from traditional POS terminals, instead favoring a PC-based station with a touchscreen. Using a PC for the software would make it easier to install updates in the future, and the touchscreen would make life easier for their employees.
“POS-X is a well-known provider of POS solutions that’s used in a lot of large retail stores,” Schan notes. “They are known for their reliability, good support and ease of use for users.”
With POS-X assisting remotely, the client was able to easily manage the deployment and testing.
“It was a very smooth deployment with the POS-X technical team offering 24/7 support,” Schan says.
The client was expecting several thousand credit card transactions in that one weekend, and having an updated POS system not only meant PCI compliance, but getting people through the line faster too.
The whole process made for a happy client.
“Schan made the transition smooth and seamless,” the client said. “He replied to phone calls and emails quickly and helped us explore every option available to us, making it much easier for us to source what was needed. Everything we ordered … arrived quickly and worked perfectly as we approached our busiest time of year.”
Sounds like a victory lap is in order.
