Every quarter, MicroAge recognizes an associate for their commitment to supporting our clients and team members and for living our values every day.
Meet David Duncan, our Associate of the Quarter for Q3, MicroAge Account Executive, and children’s author. With over 15 years in channel and technology experience,
David is a natural leader and has become a trusted subject matter expert and collaborative liaison between sales and the leadership team. He was catapulted to Employee of the Quarter for Q3 2020 by his abundance of recognitions, including the Rising Star Award last year, and ranking with the sales elite on Top Gun numerous times over the last four years. David’s feedback has helped to guide management in mission-critical areas through day-to-day interactions and his participation in the Sales Council—sharing key insights on changing, high-performance technologies that support the strategies his clients are building around remote workplace, digital transformation, and Cybersecurity.
1. What brought you to MicroAge/why did you want to work here?
I liked the concept of sales reps being required to have several years of IT experience. That conveyed to me that MicroAge wasn’t the typical company that hires just anyone who applies in hopes that they stick around. I also liked the lack of arbitrary sales goals and the compensation plan.
2. Tell us about what you do every day in your role:
Every day I build stronger relationships with my clients. I am active in a lot of onsite in-person meetings—I find that brings us closer together. Maybe that’s what many of my clients come to me through referral. Relationships are everything.
3. What do you love about working at MicroAge?
I like the autonomy MicroAge provides us and that we have internal resources that support us with just about any client need. I appreciate that MicroAge is always looking for ways to do better as a business organization and an employer. Not only looking at what we do now but also at what is important to help us grow in the future.
4. We know every team member makes more possible. How are you making a difference?
My customer service skills are the highlight of what I do at MicroAge. I respond quickly to my clients’ questions, and I’m able to find and provide them with the best possible resources even if I don’t know the answers immediately.
5. Which of our MicroAge values resonate with you most and why? (Add value to everything we do • Respect our relationships • Act with integrity • Make things happen • Do it right the first time • Have fun!)
Act with integrity! It all starts with doing the right thing. Even if that means making less money for myself or even missing out on an opportunity. Prospects and clients are people too. They want to make a connection while finding solutions to help their businesses succeed. And they realize that reliable, trusted account executives are hard to find.
Even if they find they find them, at many organizations, sales members are shuffled around so often that they may not be their client long-term. Earning a long-lasting relationship takes building trust—first and foremost.
6. What is your best MicroAge memory?
Being recognized at last year’s Award Dinner ceremony is my fondest MicroAge memory. To stand among the account executives that are in the Top Gun Recognition program every month was an honor. It validated that my efforts to make my clients’ lives easier is paying off and making a real difference for them.
7. Who inspires you and why?
Account executives who have been with MicroAge for a decade-plus and have retained their same clients over that time inspire me. In a climate where people tend to move from job-to-job every three to five years, it shows how well respected and trusted an account executive is when their clients have stayed with them for so many years. And it shows how good an employer MicroAge is when an account executive stays at MicroAge that long.
8. What do you enjoy doing most outside of the office?
I enjoy spending time with my family the most! I’m a big kid at heart, so the fact that my daughter is still young enough to want to play with me gives me the most happiness.
9. What’s the best advice you’ve been given in your career?
Always do the right thing for your clients. Period.
