Long road trips can be monotonous, but not for groups touring America on one ground transportation company’s luxury buses—they’re able to stream movies, check Facebook and read email thanks to a mobile cloud Wi-Fi solution MicroAge integrated.
Wanting to offer free Wi-Fi to customers as a basic service, a Southwest-based ground transportation company was also interested in capturing additional revenue by providing broadband for video streaming and other high-speed Internet use. The company turned to MicroAge’s Joseph Baca, for the technology upgrade needed to make it happen.
“Companies frequently contact MicroAge because they don’t know what to use or how to set it up,” Joseph says. “Our experts are familiar with a wide variety of technologies, and were able to put a solution together that worked perfectly for this client.”
Selecting a wireless wide area network (WWAN) router was easy—Joseph says Cradlepoint’s cloud-managed COR IBR1100 is the best router by far, but finding the right high-gain antenna was imperative for trips to remote landmarks. “Wireless routers come with a basic antenna, but high-gain antennas extend their range. After doing a lot of research, I found one that stands up very well.”
Implementing HotspotSystem’s Hotspot Pro credit card authentication software was also critical for the solution’s success. “Not only does it provide a splash page where users can agree to terms of service, but it’s also a marketing tool that collects email addresses for the client to follow up with to book future trips.”
The client was so pleased with the prototype Joseph developed that it ordered 18 for its fleet of tour buses, and another four for its smaller 10-passenger vans. The service is so popular that tour groups are increasingly purchasing Wi-Fi for the entire bus.
