Every quarter, MicroAge recognizes an associate for their commitment to supporting our clients and team members and for living our values every day.
Meet Rick Walsh, our Associate of the Quarter for Q1 and Senior Account Executive who doubles as a MicroAge company culture strategist. Over the last twelve years, Rick continues working at MicroAge to build meaningful relationships with clients, partners, and team members.
That’s never been more apparent than this year when he launched Stay Apart Together—a daily initiative to keep our culture thriving and our now fully remote workforce more connected than ever.
1. What brought you to MicroAge/why did you want to work here?
I’d already been in channel and technology sales for six years with a major industry player, and I was ready to be empowered to make decisions so I could take even better care of my clients. The emphasis around building out relationships and working objectively to help our clients reach their unique goalposts is something I was passionate about before joining MicroAge. I’m in my element here.
2. Tell us about what you do every day in your role:
I help my clients figure out how to solve business problems with the right technology services and or solutions. This includes close and constant collaboration with our sales engineers, partners, and manufacturers.
Recently, I also started becoming more involved in keeping our MicroAge company culture consistent during these uncertain times. I was looking for a water cooler replacement after we all went remote, and I knew interacting with the team would be healthier for everyone, myself included.
3. What do you love about working at MicroAge?
I love the company culture, the people, and the autonomy I have to work every day with my clients and their specific goals in mind.
4. We know every team member makes more possible. How are you making a difference?
Every day I come to work looking to see how I can drive the best outcomes for my clients. And when it comes to MicroAge, I was proud to launch Stay Apart Together—a virtual event ala Microsoft Teams—that’s now a company-wide initiative. It’s a place where we can all share each other’s company, laughter, and in some cases, super-human talents.
I have received many emails from team members letting me know how important this has been in their day-to-day lives and I’m grateful for the opportunity to connect, entertain, and slightly inspire other MicroAgers. Making people laugh and temporarily forget that we are all hunkering down is a great way to make a difference these days.
5. Which of our MicroAge values resonate with you most and why? (Add value to everything we do • Respect our relationships • Act with integrity • Make things happen • Do it right the first time • Have fun!)
Have fun definitely fits my personality, but it is probably the least important of the values. I think the rest of them are equally important and show what MicroAge is all about.
6. What is your best MicroAge memory?
My first day. Being around a team of people who are focused on a mission but are also kind and friendly was huge. I felt at home from the start.
7. Who inspires you and why?
I am inspired by people who have enough courage to be kind to strangers.
8. What do you enjoy doing most outside of the office?
I play guitar, fish, and hang out with my kids.
9. What’s the best advice you’ve been given in your career?
When things seem crazy in life to always remember that in six months from now everything will be different.
